Millwork Lighting: Horizontal
This classic millwork detail is the default for lighting bookshelves, kitchen cabinets, glassware, and more. Combine accent-level tape light (150 lm/ft) with a dimmer.
Front mounted
Mount the light at the front of the upper shelf, aiming down. Either recess the light into the shelf, and/or build a small valence to conceal the light further and prevent glare. Take care to leave grooves or slots for wire management for the wires leading into and/or out of the fixtures.

Rear mounted
Positioning the light at the wall emphasizes the backsplash. This is primarily a decorative effect, yet still delivers light to the work surfaces. The channel should be embedded into the upper shelf, or even recessed further to create a small pocket between the backsplash and the cabinet.

Millwork Lighting: Upward
Highlighting the contents of shelving from behind is an unusual detail that works particularly well with glass and other reflective items on display. Use an accent level light (150+ lm/ft) for a subtle effect.
Rear mounted facing up
Recess the light into the rear of the shelf aiming up. This backlights objects, highlights the backsplash, and limits the amount of light projected directly at the viewer.
